If you plan to travel Korea, and search about local market, you might easily find 'Jeon'. It is one of popular traditional food in Korea. Today, I'm going to tell you what 'Jeon' is, the different types you can try, and why you should taste it when you visit Korea.

What is Jeon?

Basically, it's a dish where you take certain ingredients, coat the in flour and egg (sometimes does not use egg, sometimes uses water!), then fry them up. there are all kinds on varieties, the recipes are super simple, and most importantly, they're delicious (that is why Koreans really love it).
In Korea, people especially eat Jeon during holidays like Seollal and Chuseok (both are biggest holidays in Korea) when families get together. But it's not just for holidays. You'll find people enjoying it as a snack or even a meal any time. If you visit Korea restaurant, it's pretty easy to find Jeon sold as a side dish. It's often paired with dishes like Kalguksu(hand-cut noodle soup) or Sujebi(hand-pulled dough soup). And of course, it goes perfectly with Korea's traditional rice wine, Makgeoli!

Different kinds on Jeon

There are so many kinds of Jeon, but let me introduce some of the famous ones and my personal favorite. First up, Kimchi Jeon. It is probably one of the most popular one. It' made with well-fermented Kimchi, giving is a spicy kick. Currently, you'll often see it topped with cheese and sold as Kimchi-cheese Jeon. Next, there's Haemul-Pajeon. it is a seafood and green onion Jeon. It's slightly spicy, with bits of shrimp and other seafood, giving it great texture and flavor. And there's Gamja Jeon. My personal favorite! It's made by grating potatoes, so it has really chewy texture and rich potato flavor. It's honestly so good. I highly recommend you try it when you visit Korea!

Why should try Jeon?

Because it's a true local food that Koreans genuinely love. Like I mentioned earlier, it's not just for special occasions like holidays, it's also something people casually eat as a side dish with their daily meals. Sine there are so many kinds, trying a variety and finding your favorite could be one of the highlights of your trip!
